Experts, who attended the 8th edition of The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling-2016 on Saturday, fielded a volley of questions from students and parents.

Like in the previous editions, most questions were on CET counselling and admission procedures, besides career opportunities in engineering. There were many questions on NEET for admission to medical course. The experts responded to questions on career choices and choosing promising and rewarding careers.

B. Krishnamurthy, director and dean, Mysore Medical College and Research Institute; B. Sadashive Gowda, principal, Vidya Vardhaka College of Engineering, Mysuru; CET coordinator M.S. Srinivas, and career counsellor and trainer from CIGMA, India, Syed Aijaz Ahmed were the panellists. They gave convincing replies to the participants, besides enlightening students on making career choices suiting their interests. Responding to a question on making it big by doing MBBS without postgraduation, Dr. Krishnamurthy said, “Without PG, a person with MBBS degree can establish a good career. There is no compulsion to do PG for a bright career. I have seen many doctors who have made it big with MBBS.”

Prof. Gowda replied to queries on which engineering branch should be opted; the branch that is promising; on whether to give importance to the college or the branch; placement opportunities; scope for branches like environment engineering, polymer science and so on.

Both Dr. Krishnamurthy and Mr. Srinivas handled questions on medical admissions and NEET. Mr. Srinivas asked students and parents to wait till June 14 when the seat matrix would be announced to know the number of medical seats available.

There were questions on the opportunities available for pure science, food technology and visual arts, which was answered by Mr. Aijaz.

On a question on opting for aeronautical engineering at the undergraduate level, Prof. Gowda advised students to opt for core engineering subjects. In the end, the event helped students and parents clarify their doubts and gain knowledge on the opportunities for developing a promising career.
