In a curious turn of events, a lecturer, whose house was burgled when he was away, received a courier containing the stolen gold jewellery with an apology letter.

According to police, the house of Nanjundaswamy, a lecturer in JSS Polytechnic for differently-abled, in T.K. Layout was burgled when he was in Bengaluru.

He had left his house early on November 2 with his wife and daughter to distribute invites for his daughter’s wedding. His son, Chandan, a software engineer, who was to join them in Bengaluru later in the evening, invited three friends home after his family had left, the police said.

In the afternoon, when it was time for Chandan to leave for Bengaluru, they came out of the house. “After he locked the house, he kept the house keys in the dickey of a scooter parked in the compound. He later opened a window of the house and placed the scooter keys inside before shutting the window,” said Venkatesh, Inspector of Saraswathipuram police station. Later, Chandan took a drop to the railway station from his friends and joined his family. The owner of the house, who stays on the first floor, noticed the front door open the next day and telephoned Mr. Nanjundaswamy, who in turn called up his brother. He was shocked to find the almirah in the house ajar and the contents ransacked.

Mr. Nanjundaswamy rushed back to Mysuru and found gold jewellery weighing 280 grams missing. The police said the friends included two students of medicine, studying in Hassan and Dakshina Kannada, besides one call centre employee. Much to the surprise of the police and relief to Mr. Nanjundaswamy, a courier was delivered to the latter’s house on November 5 containing about 232 grams of the jewellery and an apology letter written in English. The letter, purported to have been written by the father seeking forgiveness for the mistake committed by his son, promised to return the remaining gold jewellery soon. The sender of the courier named “Ramesh” had also requested for the police complaint to be withdrawn or else the family will commit suicide.
