Minister for Minor Irrigation Shivaraj S. Tangadagi on Tuesday said the department would take up rejuvenation of one tank in each Assembly constituency and the work would be completed by May next.
As announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2014-15 budget, the department was preparing detailed plans for rejuvenation of tanks, Mr. Tangadagi told presspersons here.
The tanks would be selected based on the recommendation from the local legislator. However, such tanks should have received water at least once in the last three years, the Minister said. The work includes removal of silt, remodelling and improving feeder canals.
Construction of 20 tanks in the State, the work on which started during 2013-14, was nearing completion. Nearly 300 tanks had been remodelled during the period, the Minister said.
He said legislators had been demanding revival of the Jalasamvardhana project, which seeks to improve the holding capacity of waterbodies and encourage rainwater harvesting.
The department was preparing a proposal and it would be taken up after getting government approval, Mr. Tangadagi said.
