One more person, who was treated for gastroenteritis caused by drinking contaminated piped drinking water supplied by the gram panchayat in Maidolalu village in Bhadravati taluk, died on Monday. With this, the death toll from the outbreak of water-borne diseases — cholera and gastroenteritis in the village — has risen to six.

S.K. Patil, 46, who was also a former member of the Bhadravati Taluk Panchayat, was admitted to McGann Hospital, following bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea on February 10. He was treated for gastroenteritis, but when his health worsened, he was shifted to a private hospital in Udupi district.

On Monday morning, his condition deteriorated and he breathed his last. An outbreak of gastroenteritis has been reported from Mangote village near Maidolalu on Sunday. As many as six persons from Mangote have been hospitalised for vomiting and dysentery; they are said to be stable.
