In the first incident, Mahesh Shenoy, Karkala taluk convener of Bajrang Dal; Ganesh Poojary, an activist with the same outfit; and three unidentified persons, came in a car and assaulted Sheikh Mohsin, 25, with wooden sticks, stones and a sword, at Banglegudde in Kukkundur village at around 7.15 p.m. on Thursday. Mohsin was rushed to the hospital. Rishikesh Sonawane, Assistant Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu on Friday that Mohsin was given treatment and discharged.
The gang then cut down an arecanut tree with flag and buntings near Banglegudde at 7.30 p.m. They allegedly abused Mohammed, 22, who managed to flee before he was attacked.
At Kasaba Kallotte at 7.45 p.m., the gang allegedly stopped Salman, 19, who was riding a scooter, and abused and tried to assault him, but he too managed to escape. Three separate cases have been registered under various sections of the IPC at Karkala town police station. Superintendent of Police Laxman Nimbargi said that while Mahesh Shenoy and Ganesh Poojary belonged to Bajrang Dal, the affiliation of the other persons were not known. The police are on the lookout for the accused, he said.
