No Question Hour in Legislative Council session

June 02, 2013 09:58 am | Updated June 13, 2016 03:04 am IST - BANGALORE:

The Legislative Council will have a four-day session in addition to the Governor’s address to the joint session of the legislature on Monday.

Announcing this at a press conference in Bangalore on Saturday, Legislative Council Chairman D.H. Shankaramurthy said the Council would meet soon after Governor H.R. Bhardwaj’s address.

The Upper House would again meet from Tuesday to Friday. However, the Council session will not have Question Hour due to the short notice on which the session is being held as the members are required to submit their questions at least 10 days in advance. But the Zero Hour and Calling Attention notices would be allowed, he said.

Referring to the petition filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party before the Assembly polls seeking disqualification of six of its MLCs for anti-party activities, Mr. Shankaramurthy said the number of MLCs in question had actually reduced to three as three of them had already quit.

BJP MLCs Ashwathnarayana and Somanna Bevinamarad had filed a petition before Council Secretary Shreesh seeking disqualification of the former Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa’s loyalists Bharati Shetty, B.J. Puttaswamy, Shivaraj Sajjan, Mohan Limbikai, Mumtaz Ali Khan and M.D. Laxminarayana from the Upper House on the grounds that they had identified themselves with the Karnataka Janata Paksha despite getting elected to the House on the BJP ticket. However, Mr. Laxminarayana, Mr. Limbikayi and Mr Sajjan have already quit their Council seats.

He said the proceedings, with respect to the petition seeking disqualification, were on. The authorities had issued notices to the MLCs and their reply had been forwarded to the petitioners. The process would move forward depending upon the response from the petitioners.
