The National Human Rights Commission, on Tuesday, issued notice to the Prisons Department seeking an explanation on the treatment of inmates who were allegedly tortured and shifted to various jails across the State following a protest at the Bengaluru prison.
The NHRC took cognizance based on a complaint filed by Shobha Karandlaje, MP, on July 17. The commission has issued notices to senior prison officials asking them to submit a report on the allegations, along with present location and state of health of the injured/shifted prisoners within four weeks. “It need not be restated that a prisoner is not a slave of the State and is not denuded of all his fundamental rights, while in judicial custody,” said the NHRC. Prison officials, however, said they are not aware of the notice.
