The new Police Commissioner of Belagavi, T.G. Krishna Bhat, has accorded top priority to streamline traffic and bring down the menace of over-loading vehicles used to transport children to schools in the city.

At his maiden press conference here on Thursday, Mr.Bhat, who took charge of his new office on July 15, said he would also look into the incidences of human trafficking and try to complete the construction of the new building for the Police Commissionerate within one-and-a-half years.

He said he was studying the traffic conditions and other priority areas in the city and take concrete measures to improve conditions and for smoother movement of traffic.

Responding to questions related to the growing menace of illegal sand transportation into the city and politicians coming to the rescue of sand traders operating without proper permits and interfering in police duties, he said the case of a politician (Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress president Laxmi R. Hebbalkar) was being inquired into.

In addition to maintenance of law & order, he would also look into the problems confronting the constabulary in the department. “The police personnel at the lower level were facing several problems and we need to look into them and try to improve their working conditions,” he added.
