Mysuru zoo has obtained a pair of smooth-coated otters from Dr. Shyamaprasad Mukherjee Zoological Garden, Surat Municipal Corporation, Gujarat, on Sunday.

With the addition of the two new animals, the number of otters at Mysuru zoo has gone up to four.

The pair will soon be joining Swami and Ranga, the male otters at the zoo.

Exchange programme

K. Kamala, Zoo Executive Director, said the pair had been procured under an animal exchange programme.

A pair of black swans and a pair of hyenas have been given to the Surat zoo in exchange for otters, she said.

The new otters may be displayed in about three days, she added.

Other animals

Ms. Kamala said four zebras from Israel and green anacondas from Sri Lanka may soon make Mysuru zoo their home as clearances were awaited for their arrival.

Proposals to bring five gharials and five rock pythons from the crocodile park in Chennai are also on.

Efforts were also being made to get a Himalayan black bear from Shillong, she added.
