The security system at the Mysuru City Railway Station is set for an upgrade, with 20 CCTV cameras to be commissioned shortly.
This is part of the Integrated Security System (ISS) which will be in place at select railway stations across the country. While 20 cameras have been installed in specific locations, another 14 are being procured to cover the entire premises.
Mr. Channamallikarjuna, Divisional Security Commissioner of Mysuru Division of the South Western Railway, told The Hindu that the security system has been provided for only three stations under the South Western Railway: Mysuru, Bengaluru and Yeshwantpur.
The 20 cameras are the latest high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom cameras which can cover a vast area, including the parking lot and the Divisional Railway Commissioner’s office. These systems have both recording and playback capabilities and will be monitored at the control room to give effective 365-degree security cover.
The Under Vehicle Screening System, and advanced baggage screening system will also become operational soon. Mr. Channamallikarjuna said that crime rate under the Mysuru Division had reduced due to CCTV surveillance, Railway Protection Force (RPF) escort for long-distance trains, and random checks including deployment of sniffer dogs.
In a bid to sensitise the public about security issues, the authorities conducted a drive from August 29 to September 4, which also marked observation of the RPF Raising Day. During the drive, railway passengers were apprised of certain dos and don’ts in their interest.
The crackdown on offenders helped authorities book 39 cases against trespassers at level-crossing gates, which yielded Rs. 1.43 lakh. A total of 6,995 cases were booked for various offences so far during the current financial year. The public has been requested to avail the 24x7 security helpline number 182 to report any untoward incident, to elicit prompt response from the RPF and other security agencies.
