Multi-village water supply schemes sanctioned

The State government has given technical sanction for implementation of four multi-village drinking water supply schemes (MVDWSS) in the district in 2014-15, which will benefit 68 villages.

The four projects have been approved in Santekadur and 16 neighbouring villages, Holebenavalli and 23 neighbouring villages, Bullapura and 17 neighbouring villages, and Yadehalli and eight neighbouring villages. The total estimated cost of these projects is Rs. 37.66 crore. Water will be lifted for the projects in Santekadur, Holebenavalli and Bullapura from Tunga river while the water for the project in Yadehalli will be lifted from Bhadra river.

Under the MVDWSS, drinking water will be provided to people from rivers and tanks.

Overhead tanks

The water is lifted from the river bed with the help of jackwells and is stored in overhead tanks at an elevated place. After purification of the water, it will be supplied to the human habitations with pipeline network.

Basavaraj, Assistant Engineer of Department of Rural Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation told The Hindu that villages were selected for the scheme based on information available with the National Rural Drinking Water Programme and water quality tests conducted at the local level.

Tata Shivan, Executive Engineer of department, said that tenders have been floated for all four schemes and work would commence shortly.
