Work to repair and rejuvenate the historical Hulikere tunnel at Hulikere village on the outskirts of the town are in its advanced stage.
The earth had caved in at different parts near the tunnel in 2012. Subsequently, the State government had taken up the repair work at an estimated Rs. 9.5 crore in 2014.
The Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL) has completed over 65 per cent of the repair works of the tunnel, of the Visvesvaraya canal under the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS), and decided to complete the remaining works by Thursday.
C.S. Puttaraju, MP, on Saturday inspected the ongoing repair work of the tunnel and instructed the officials concerned to speed it up. He was accompanied by CNNL officials. The remaining work would be completed in a few days, Mr. Puttaraju told presspersons.
Mr. Puttaraju has also instructed the officials to ensure the release of water into it by Thursday.
The 2.8 km Hulikere tunnel was constructed between June 1928 and October 1931, during the reign of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar.
