There is some good news for students as there will be 350 additional seats in government medical colleges across the State. This will help ease concerns over the limited number of seats when compared to the lakhs of students vying for a medical degree. Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash R. Patil, on Wednesday, said seven government colleges have got permission from the Medical Council of India to enhance seats by 50. These include: Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences, Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, Shivamogga Institute of Medical Sciences, Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences, and Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Hubballi.

Uncertainty over deemed varsity seats

With the Directorate General of Health Services deciding to conduct counselling for seats in deemed universities, the State may not get its 25% government quota seats in these universities.

Besides this, several deemed universities will also part with 25% of the seats that are enhanced, for which the State government would give permission. Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash R. Patil said the department officials would clarify with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on the same.
