Traffic signals at all 52 prominent traffic junctions in city will be modernised and smart signal lights, which automatically change signals based on the density of the traffic on a particular stretch, will replace the existing ones.

Now, commuters have to wait till the signal turns green even when there are no vehicles as the lights are pre-timed.

The new system will reduce the delay and also adapt to fluctuation in traffic flows.

Praveen Amte, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and traffic), recently said that the new system works on real-time information and vehicle presence is conveyed to the controller through detectors placed at various points.

It handles random fluctuations in the traffic condition, he said adding that it reduces the overall delays and optimises the signal timings at the intersection.

The new system is being installed in all circles in the city at a cost of ₹4 crore. According to reports, the new technology could help the police department, which is grappling with staff shortage. Most of the traffic junctions are left unmanned while many are manned by Home Guards. Mr. Praveen said that of the 52 traffic junctions, 20 have already been replaced by the new system. He said that the new system would be installed in all traffic junctions by August-end.
