Miscreants tried to set ablaze a car parked outside a house at Vinobha Nagar locality in violence-hit Shivamogga city on Friday night.
The vehicle belongs to one Maharudrappa. The neighbours helped the car owner to immediately douse the fire. The vehicle was partially burnt in the incident. A case has been registered with Vinobha Nagar police station in this connection.
Following the communal violence that erupted in the city on February 19, incidents of torching the vehicles during night are being reported regularly in the city.
In wake of the untoward incidents that were reported in the city from past few days, the police had made elaborate security arrangements to ensure peace and order during Holi festival that was celebrated here
on Saturday. The district administration had declared holidays for schools and colleges and had banned the sale of liquor in the city limits as a precautionary measure.
The police had sanctioned permission to celebrate Holi from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. The police personnel were deployed in large numbers at sensitive areas including Amir Ahmed Circle, Gandhi Bazaar, M.K.K. Road and Tunga Nagar. As announced earlier, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code was clamped in the city limits from 1 p.m. Saturday till 6 a.m. on Sunday.
