The postgraduate department of commerce of Teresian College took part in the recently-concluded Micro-insurance Awareness and Enrolment Mission (MAEM), an initiative of the department of studies in commerce, University of Mysore, as part of the centenary celebrations of the university. The activities of the mission were carried out from July 1, 2015, to June 7, 2016.
The objectives of the mission were to create awareness among the rural masses, to enrol them in various government-sponsored micro-insurance schemes, and to promote financial inclusion. Micro-insurance schemes such as Yashaswini, Vajpayee Arogyashree, Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyothi Bima Yojana and Modified National Agriculture Insurance Scheme (crop insurance) were considered for the research study.
At the college level, the activities of the mission were carried out under the guidance of P.M. Shiva Prasad, assistant professor at Teresian College.
Seven villages were adopted by the department — Kiralu, Sarakari Uttanahalli, Devalapura, Kumbarahalli, Koodanahalli, Lalithadripura (all in Mysuru taluk), and Sarvamanya Hoskote in Nanjangud taluk, a release said.
Door-to-door awareness campaigns were conducted and 231 villagers were enrolled to the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana.
The mission was partly funded by UoM. Dr. Shiva Prasad was felicitated with a certificate of excellence for his performance as convenor during felicitation and valedictory programme of MAEM held recently.
