A gathering of organic farmers, scientists and civil society institutions, among others, will be held here on Sunday to discuss the status of soil and methods of improving soil health.
To be held at Rangayana from 10.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., the event has been organised to mark International Year of Soil 2015 as declared by the U.N. and to gather grassroots-level responses on improving soil health. The meeting has been jointly organised by Nesara, Soil, Pristine, Samvada and Green Foundation and the participants will discuss importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system.
Vanaja Ramaprasad of Green Foundation said the government should provide subsidy support to green initiatives to ensure safety of soil’s health. “The present system cannot solve the crisis as soil has degraded due to years of indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and a shift to ecological fertilisation is imperative to ensure health of the soil,” she said.P. Guruprasad of Nesara said taxpayers’ money should be invested in a meaningful way by providing support system for ecological farming.
