The revised meal allowance for prisoners across the State will come into effect from Saturday. The meal allowance for each prisoner has been hiked from Rs 48 to Rs 78.

Disclosing this here on Friday, Additional Director General of Police (Prisons) K.V. Gagandeep said the State government has given its nod for the appointment of 250 prison wardens and the recruitment process will commence from February.

He said the facility of surveillance cameras will be extended to prisons in the remaining prisons in the State and the telemedicine facility, which was available in the central prisons of Bangalore and Belgaum, will be extended to five more district prisons.

The kitchen at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bangalore, which houses about 4,000 prisoners, would be modernised at a cost of Rs one crore, he announced.

While announcing that steps would be taken to provide Aadhaar cards to the prisoners, the senior police officer said all prisons in the State would be computerised for keeping digital data of the prisoners.

Mr. Gagandeep was in Mysore to participate in the passing out parade of the 42nd batch of prison warders at the Prison Training Institute here.
