Processions were taken out by workers and public meetings were held to mark May Day in the city on Monday.

The district unit of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) took out a procession from the Government Science College to Ambedkar Bhavan. Anganawadi workers, porters, autorickshaw drivers, and workers of the Akshara Dasoha Scheme took part.

Addressing a public meeting later, S.B. Shivashankar, a CITU functionary, demanded both the Union and State governments take measures to strengthen the social security net for the workers of the unorganised sector.

Addressing a programme held at the premises of Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee (APMC) to mark May Day, K.B. Prasanna Kumar, Shivamogga MLA said the State government would release necessary funds for construction of restrooms at APMC for porters and for farmers who bring their produce to the market.

Awareness programmes on labour laws were held at University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga, and at Shivamogga Milk Union Limited.
