The civic body has issued May 10 as the deadline for residents to install meters to their drinking water connections. The Mysuru City Corporation’s (MCC) contract with the Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (JUSCO) for drinking water supply to the city is scheduled to come to an end next month.

Hundreds of residents in certain pockets of the city had either refused to have meters installed or had removed the meters that had been installed by JUSCO.

In a statement here, MCC has identified Navilu Road, Kukkarahalli area, Manchegowdana Koppal,Giribovi Palya and Kurubarahalli among areas where residents had not yet installed meters. It had also come to the notice of MCC that some residents in certain wards had removed the meters that had been installed, leading to leakage of water.

If the residents fail to install the meters, which are being installed free of cost by JUSCO, before the deadline, such households will not only have to install meters at their own cost but also face action as per law, said a statement issued by MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath.

Mayor R. Lingappa said the MCC would stop the supply of water to unauthorised connections.

Though JUSCO was entrusted with the task of installing meters to about 1.2 lakh connections in the city, Mr. Lingappa said maters had been installed for several unauthorised connections as well in the process.

Before the contract was handed over to JUSCO, drinking water connections in the city were estimated to be around 1.2 lakh, which over the last eight years has risen to 1.8 lakh connections.

VVWW Assistant Executive Engineer (West) Chandrashekar said JUSCO had roughly installed more than 1.1 lakh meters.
