Mangaluru customs earns ₹2,022 cr. revenue

The Customs and Central Excise, Mangaluru Commissionerate, realised revenue of ₹2,022 crore up to the first fortnight of January 2018 as against the target of ₹2,300 crore for this financial year, said Commissioner V. Subramanyam.

Speaking at the International Customs Day here on Saturday, he said the revenue earned by the Commissionerate was 60% more than what was earned last year. Accolading the work of the staff working at the airport and the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), Mr. Subramanyam said the Commissionerate was known for its good work ethics, technical expertise and customer friendly outlook.

The Commissioner said the Air Intelligence Unit at Mangaluru International Airport and the Special Intelligence and Investigation branch at the NMPT have detected 57 cases involving customs duty evasion amounting to ₹5.41 crore. Of this, 62% was gold seizures. Revamping of systems and thorough analysis led the Post Clearance Audit wing of the customs to detect evasion of ₹2 crore customs duty this month, he said.

Mr. Subramanyam said customs sleuths disposed of seized contraband that yielded ₹5.16 crore. The sleuths have also recovered ₹12 crore arrears of Customs duty.

Faster clearance

The customs sleuths, the officer said, have reduced cargo release time. While the dwell time for imports was 0.54 days for imports, it was 0.65 days for exports. The changes brought in clearance of sea and air cargo have helped improve the country’s ranking in terms of ease of doing business, he said. Mr. Subramanyam said 97% of passengers coming to Manglauru airport were opting for green channel clearance.

In-charge Chairman of NMPT Suresh P. Shirwardkar and Director of National Institute of Technology-Karnataka Karnam Uma Maheshwar Rao also spoke. They gave away awards to several firms. Adani Wilmar Pvt. Ltd. received award for being the top revenue contributor, while Indian Oil Corporation was awarded for substantial growth in revenue. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. received award for highest export performance, while KIOCL was awarded for substantial growth in exports. Senior Intelligence Officer Allen Rajesh Vas, who recently received President’s Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding service, was felicitated.
