Tipu Jayanti celebrations in Mandya and Ramanagaram districts passed off peacefully on Friday amid unprecedented security arrangements.

Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, was lauded at a function organised at Sri Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar Kala Mandir here.

Prof. Karimuddin, addressing the gathering at Kala Mandir, described Tipu as everyone’s icon as, according to him, he had implemented a series of pro-people policies and programmes to uplift the neglected sections of society.

Emphasising the need to strengthen the fort at Srirangapatna, believed to be constructed by Thimmanna Nayaka of the Vijayanagar Empire in 1454, Mr. Karimuddin said that Tipu’s contribution to banking, revenue, religion and other sectors was enormous. The fort was of great importance during the rule of Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan.

C.S. Puttaraju, MP, inaugurated the programme. Mandya Zilla Panchayat president J. Premakumari, Mandya Taluk Panchayat president K.M. Beerappa, Deputy Commissioner N. Manjushri; B. Sharath, Chief Executive Officer, Mandya ZP; G. Radhika, Superintendent of Police; and others were present.

People from different parts of the State visited the Gumbaz at Srirangapatna and paid tributes at the graves of Tipu, his father Hyder Ali and his mother Fakr-Un-Nisa.

Meanwhile, Energy Minister D.K. Shivakumar and others participated in the programme at the Junior College ground in Ramanagaram.

According to reports, Tipu Sultan was also remembered at State-sponsored events at all taluk headquarters in both districts.
