Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) president Hosahalli Boregowda (52), senior Congressman, died of massive cardiac arrest at his residence on Thursday.
Mr. Boregowda might have passed away in the early hours of Thursday. But, the death came to light at 7.30 a.m. when the CMC officials visited his residence, near Bisilu Maramma temple at Hosahalli, to take him to Sir M. Visvesvaraya District Stadium to attend the International Day of Yoga programmes.
The four-time councillor, also the seniormost member of the CMC, had entered public life in 90s by actively participating in the Cauvery water dispute-related agitations. He was also known for mobilising crowd for the Cauvery agitations.
Mr. Boregowda was a loyal Congressman and had contested the election for the post of CMC president in September 2013. However, he secured only one vote, of his, in the election that was won by an Independent councillor B. Siddaraju.
The veteran Congress leader then had cried in front of media and levelled the allegation of “selling the president’s post” by the then Minister M.H. Ambareesh’s aide Amaravati Chandrashekar.
He was made the CMC chief in March 2016 during the second term.
Mr. Boregowda’s family members are in Hyderabad on a tour and they are expected to return by the evening. The cremation will take place after the family members return.
A two-minute silence was observed at the district stadium during the Yoga Day celebrations because of his demise.
