A man killed a woman and committed suicide at Padubidri village in Udupi district on Wednesday.
According to the police, Naveen (45) was a driver whose wife had left him. Tara (40), a widow, was working in a supermarket. Naveen murdered Tara because she spurned his offer of marriage.
Police sources said, Naveen slit Tara’s throat with a sharp instrument and she bled to death. Naveen, then, used Tara’s duppatta and hung himself at the latter’s house.
The incident took place between 8.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Wednesday. There are no eyewitnesses to the incident.
K. Annamalai, Assistant Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu that in a suicide note, addressed to the Sub-Inspector of Padubidri police station, Naveen wrote that twenty years ago he was in love with Tara but could not get married to her.
A case had been registered at the Padubidri police station and investigations were on, the police said. Mr. Annamalai confirmed that the post-mortem of the bodies had been done.
