The Shikaripur rural police have arrested a person on Saturday on the charge of murdering his brother. Kumar (42), a resident of Amatekoppa village in Shikaripur taluk, is the accused. His younger brother Umesh (35) was physically challenged. The police said that, after the death of their parents, Kumar was looking after Umesh.

According to police, the Kumar hired a mini-truck and took Umesh to nearby Shettyhalli village on May 1. He asked Umesh to alight from the vehicle in the outskirts and reportedly ran over him. The police had initially come to the conclusion that Umesh was rammed by an unidentified vehicle and had booked a case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against unidentified persons.

The Shikaripur Rural police received two unidentified letters, said to be written by relatives of the deceased, claiming that Umesh was killed to usurp the insurance money. The police who took up a probe in this regard found that the deceased was insured for accident death in three insurance policies for a total sum of Rs. 45 lakh, with Kumar as nominee for all the three policies. The police said that Kumar was reportedly paying the premium amount for these policies on behalf of his brother and had made preparations to claim the insurance amount.

Cases have been booked under Section 302 (murder) and 201(causing disappearance of evidence) against the accused.
