A man died after a temple car ran over his feet during the Kurgodu Basaveshwar annual fair at Kurgodu in Ballari taluk on Sunday.
According to information available, the annual fair was being held with religious fervour and traditional gaiety. Tens of hundreds of devotees from all over the district had gathered to witness the car festival.
Meanwhile, according to eyewitnesses, the man, who was said to be near the wheels of the temple car, accidentally fell down. His feet got crushed after they came under one of the wheels.
However, the accident did not come in the way of the religious formalities to be completed.
The police and others, who were nearby, pulled the man away from the temple car. One of the devotees was seen carrying him up to the ambulance parked nearby towards the main road, while the police and others cleared the way to shift him to VIMS Hospital, around 30 km away. Though doctors attended on him, the man died of the injuries, mostly due to profuse bleeding.
The man was identified as Siddaramappa (24) of Sirigeri in Sirguppa taluk. The annual fair at Kurgodu is very popular and it is held for about a week. The temple car is pulled on the Full Moon Day (Pournima) coinciding with Holi. Devotees throng the place not only for worship but also to purchase agricultural implements and other inputs to get ready for the following kharif season.
