The media was at the receiving end on Thursday over a report aired by a private television channel about the alleged confinement of a mentally challenged woman here.
When presspersons visited the house to verify facts, the angered residents of Malamaddi clarified that the woman had not been confined by her mother.
Meanwhile, neighbours told the authorities that the woman and her mother were being taken away by a pressperson in a private vehicle. Following this, Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla sent a team of officials to the house.
“The vehicle was intercepted by the police, who detained the occupants. A case of abduction would have been registered against the press person, if the woman’s mother had not clarified that they were being taken to Bangalore for medical treatment,” Mr. Shukla said.
He added that Home Minister K.J. George and district in-charge Minister Santosh Lad had been apprised of the incident.
