The Malabar Rampage-Rickshaw Challenge 2016, an event conducted twice every year, enthralled Mangalureans on Thursday when it was flagged off from the premises of Government School at Mallikatte in Kadri here.
More enthused were the kids studying in primary, higher primary and high schools as the 38 participants from different countries interacted with them and shared their thoughts. The kids were given a glimpse of happenings around the world.
These 38 participants riding 18 autorickshaws began their ‘Rampage’ from Thiruvananthapuram on April 3 and travelled through Alappuzha and Kozhikode before reaching Mangaluru. From here, the participants are moving towards Murdeshwar and their final destination, Panaji in Goa, by April 9.
The participants are from the U.K., U.S., Australia, New Zealand, France and India. They rely upon the local people at each destination to guide them along and to win the Malabar Rampage.
The participants would be making a difference in the lives of the underprivileged by raising funds for various projects of Round Table India under their programme ‘Freedom Through Education.’ Madras Midtown Round Table 42 is the charity partner of the Malabar Rampage, with close ties with RT 128 Panaji and RT 115 Mangalore.
Improving the school
The Mangalore Round Table 115 has partnered with the Mallikatte Government School for over five years and has spent close to Rs. 6 lakh in creating infrastructure, said Deepak Ramani, its member.
Mr. Ramani told The Hindu that RT plans to provide a science laboratory and paint the building of the primary and higher primary school. It has already provided a classroom, furniture etc., to the school. On Thursday, it handed over 50 chairs for the school auditorium.
