H.D. Kumaraswamy, JD(S) leader and former Chief Minister, has strongly criticised the alleged police brutality in north Karnataka, particularly in Nargund and Navalgund, and asked Home Minister G. Parameshwara to instruct the police to behave astutely.

Whenever an injustice is done, agitation by the people is natural and suppressing it through force was unethical, he said.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Mr. Kumaraswamy expressed shock over what he termed police high-handedness.

“The police should identify clearly those miscreants who try to use the occasion for their gains and punish them,” he said, and asked them not to beat innocent people.

Mr. Kumaraswamy also said that the people of Karnataka had supported the police when they had resorted to an agitation recently.

The former Chief Minister also called upon the Bharatiya Janata Party MPs to pressure Prime Minister Narendra Modi to grant justice to Karnataka.

He said that H.D. Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister, had already met the Prime Minister twice and apprised him of the legitimate right of the people of Karnataka on the Mahadayi water.

Mr. Deve Gowda had appealed to the PM to intervene in the matter and get at least 7.5 tmcft water for Karnataka for drinking and irrigation purposes, he added.
