Law to check ‘anti-State’ activities by elected representatives: Roshan Baig

The State government will bring in a new legislation to check “anti-Karnataka activities” by elected representatives, Urban Development Minister Roshan Baig said in Belagavi on Tuesday.

After getting elected in Karnataka, members of some urban local bodies in cities like Belagavi have been found to raise slogans in favour of Maharashtra. Such indiscipline will not be tolerated. They will have to face action including disqualification, the Minister said.

He said he would initiate measures to protect Kannadigas in Maharashtra if they suffered atrocities by Marathi groups in that State. He was reacting to questions that members of some organisations in Maharashtra had tried to attack buses from Karnataka in response to his statement that local body members would be disqualified if they raised slogans of “Jai Maharashtra.” He had made a similar statement in Belagavi on Monday. Following this, former Mayor Sarita Patil and ZP member Saraswati Patil raised such slogans and had dared the government to act against them against them on Tuesday.

He said several development works would be taken up under the smart city project in Belagavi city. The government will support citizens in switching to Light Emitting Diode lights in their homes. LED lights will be used in all government buildings, he added.
