The Karnataka Land Reforms and Certain Other Law (Amendment) Bill, 2014, which was tabled in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, makes provision for promoters of industries, educational institutions, places of worship or housing projects to surrender their land to the government if they have not used it within 10 years for the purpose for which it was sanctioned.

Minister for Revenue V. Srinivas Prasad tabled the Bill. Under the proposed law, if land cannot be used within the prescribed time, such land has to be surrendered to the land bank of the government, failing which exemption would be cancelled and it would be forfeited to the government without paying compensation.

The government introduced the Bill taking into account the proposed Global Investors Meet – 2015.

Under the proposed law, permission for conversion of agricultural land for industrial development or other purposes would be granted when permission for purchase of agricultural land is accorded under Section 109 of the Karnataka Land Reforms Act, subject to payment of the fees prescribed.
