The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has issued a show-cause notice to the Mandya City Municipal Council (CMC) for allegedly violating the guidelines pertaining to the management of solid waste generated in the town.
The total quantity of solid waste being generated from all 35 wards in the town is about 58,000 tonnes a day. A dumping yard was established at Kalenahalli on the outskirts of the town.
According to sources at the KSPCB, the CMC has been dumping solid waste at public places and creating major health and environmental problems.
Following a complaint from the public, Environmental Officer K.C. Savitha recently issued the notice and sought replies from the Commissioner, T.N. Narasimha Murthy.
Second notice
Though dumping solid waste at public places is a punishable offence, under certain provisions of the Municipal Solid Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2000, the civic authority has been violating the guidelines. Hence, the board had issued a similar notice to the CMC on April 11, 2016. However, the officials have not yet responded, sources added.
