The Hassan district unit of the Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha on Thursday began a 48-hour dharna demanding that various measures be taken for ‘bagair hukum’ cultivators, including regularisation of land.

They staged the protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office here.

They also sought withdrawal of cases lodged against farmers cultivating government lands, revision of the Land Reforms Act in the interest of tillers, allotment of at least five guntas of land to all poor families, and compensation of Rs. 50,000 per acre of coconut plantation for growers who lost their crop owing to lack of rainfall.

The protesters submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, to the Deputy Commissioner.

KPRS leaders H.R. Naveen Kumar, Virupaksha, K.L. Shankar and Nanje Gowda led the protest.
