Kolar cops stop yet another minor marriage

December 11, 2014 02:43 pm | Updated 03:33 pm IST - Kolar:

Acting in the nick of time, authorities and police stopped a minor girl’s marriage in a village in Mulbagal taluk on Thursday.

The girl from Kannasandra village in Mulbagal police limits is said to be six months short of 18. She was being married to a 23-year-old youth from Hosur in Tamil Nadu. After police intervention, the groom’s relatives decided to postpone the wedding to when she reaches the legal age for marriage, according to Sub-inspector Shankar.

Acting on a tip-off, the police, along with officials of the Women and Child Welfare Department and the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), visited the marriage hall. They counselled the parents and relatives of the bride and the groom that the marriage would amount to an offence under the Child Marriage Act.

This is the second such incident involving a minor to be reported within a month in Kolar. On November 12, the CDPO and the Bangarpet police stopped the arranged marriage of a 16-year-old girl with a youth from Malur.
