Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Saturday said that the state would not allow the commercial cultivation of Bt brinjal as it would sound the “death knell” to farmers.

“Clearly, for any reason, it can’t be implemented,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. “By introducing it (Bt brinjal), it will sound the death knell to farmers“.

Commercial cultivation of Bt brinjal would not be allowed at any cost, Mr. Yeddyurappa said.

The chief minister said he has written to the Centre, stating that Karnataka would not give an opportunity for introduction of Bt Brinjal for commercial cultivation.
