The State Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval for framing special recruitment rules for filling up posts of around 11,000 pourakarmikas in urban local bodies, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), through regularisation of services of those working on contract basis.

Services of about 5,500 workers would be regularised in the BBMP alone.

With this decision, civic workers, whose services have been regularised, would get a monthly salary of ₹25,000 while those on contract would get ₹17,000 per month, said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister T.B. Jayachandra.

The monthly salary of all civic workers, including on contract, would be directly credited to bank accounts.

Increase in the salary would cost the State exchequer an additional ₹93 crore per year, while the total salary bill would touch ₹336 crore per year, Mr. Jayachandra said.

Thousands of pourakarmikas working for various civic bodies across the State on contract basis had struck work recently, demanding regularisation of services and direct payments.

They had called off their protest following an assurance by the government that the issue would be discussed in the Cabinet.
