The JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research (formerly JSS University) was conferred with QS 4 star rating following an academic audit conducted by the Quacquarelli Symonds, a U.K.–based company specialising in ranking and rating universities and academic institutions.
JSS is the third institution in the country to be accorded a QS 4 star rating after VIT, Vellore, and SRM University, Chennai. While the JSS Academy is the first in the State to be accorded a QS 4 star rating, it is also the first in the country in the field of health sciences to receive this rating, according to Vice-Chancellor B. Suresh.
Ashwin Fernandes, Regional Director, QS, said the rating is a thorough academic audit of an institution on 50 major parameters including quality of teaching, research and publications and is gauged against established international standards.
“It is a 360 degree review of an institution and compliments ranking,” he added.
The ratings range from 1 to 5 stars and there are no 5 star rated universities or institutions in India. However, the JSS Academy of Higher Education was conferred a 5 star rating in three categories – teaching, facilities and inclusiveness –besides securing a 3 star rating in pharmacy, said Mr. Fernandes.
The certificate of 4 star rating was conferred at a function here on Friday and the ratings are valid for 3 years.
The benefits of the rating system are that potential and prospective students get a wider picture of the qualities of an institution ranging from employability to facilities and community engagement. For the institution, it helps provide a road map to excel and strive to attain a 5 star rating.
Plans
Mr. Fernandes announced that the QS would launch a rating system for Indian universities and its office will be based out of Bengaluru. The new venture QS IGauge – will be a college and university rating system designed for India and will be adapted to the needs and aspirations of the Indian higher education system and help institutions to shore up their performance.
