The Janata Dal (Secular), after having extended its support to the Congress in the election to the posts of president and vice president of Shivamogga Zilla Panchayat (ZP) recently, wants the latter to reciprocate by supporting the candidature of Shankar Madalgi as vice president of Belagavi ZP, for which the elections are scheduled to be held on May 11.

In a press release on Saturday, party’s district spokesman Channappa M. Vagganavar said that the JD(S) supported Congress in Shivamogga ZP to keep the BJP out of power. Similarly, the district JD(S) decided to support the Congress candidate for the post of president of Belagavi ZP and expected the latter to support its candidate in getting elected to the post of vice president.

In the 90-member strong Belagavi ZP, the Congress won in 43 seats, BJP 39, Janata Dal(S) two and independents six. Of the six independents, five are affiliated to Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi.
