The Udupi Zilla Panchayat along with District Federation of Women’s Associations and other organisations would be organising a ‘jatha’ and a public function on the International Women’s Day here on March 14.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Sheela K. Shetty, President of Udupi Taluk Federation of Women’s Association, said that the ‘jatha’ would focus on prevention of atrocities against women. Over 500 women from different parts of the district would be participating in the ‘jatha’. The ‘jatha’, which would begin near the Service Bus Stand, will conclude at Rajangana.

As a mother, a homemaker and a working woman, women played a vital role in the society. Yet it was unfortunate that women felt insecure due to increasing atrocities against them.

According to an estimate, a case of sexual assault took place every 36 minutes in the country. This was known through cases, which had been registered. But the number could be higher if unregistered cases were taken into account.

The increasing atrocities on women had brought down the image of the country on the international foray. It was essential that stern measures were taken by both Union and State governments to prevent such atrocities.

There was an increase in atrocities on girls/women in Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga districts. Parents in rural areas were anxious when their daughters from rural areas went to schools. They heaved a sigh of relief only when the daughters returned home. The ‘jatha’ would focus on all these issues.

The ‘jatha’ would be followed by the International Day for Women function at Rajangana. Vinay Kumar Sorake, Urban Development Minister, would inaugurate the function, Ms. Shetty said.

Sarala B. Kanchan, President of District Federation of Women’s Association, Vasanti Rao Koradkal, General Secretary, Jayashree Krishnaraj, President of Udupi unit of National Federation of Human Rights, Yamuna, President of District Anganwadis Association, were present.
