Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Rakesh Kumar has stressed the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle to keep diabetes at bay.

He was speaking after flagging off a jatha taken out here on Thursday to mark World Health Day. Mr. Rakesh Kumar said that World Health Day was being observed this year with a special emphasis on curbing diabetes.

More than two lakh deaths are reported every year in India owing to diabetes. Sedentary lifestyle, consumption of junk food and failure to handle stress are attributed as reasons for increase in the incidence of diabetes.

Diabetes and other non-communicable diseases including hypertension, cancer and cardiovascular complications can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, he said.

It is necessary to avoid excess consumption of food rich in fat content. The physical exercise should become part of the lifestyle. It is unfortunate more number of youths are falling prey to alcoholism and tobacco abuse, he said.

He underscored the need to organise awareness programmes at the campuses of education institutions regularly on the evils of consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

The programme was organised by Department of Health and Family Welfare. District Health Officer Rajesh Suragihalli, District Surveillance Officer Shankarappa were present. The students of various nursing colleges and personnel serving with health establishments took out a procession to create awareness on precautions to be taken to prevent diabetes.
