As part of beefing up security arrangements, mobile phone jammers have been installed at the Ballari Central Jail. The jammers began functioning on Republic Day.

With the installation of the jammers, no one on the Central Jail premises and in its periphery can use mobile phones to make or receive calls.

Following apprehensions that inmates in the Central Jail, who include some notorious criminals, were operating from inside the jail using mobile phones, the government had proposed to install jammers to prevent the use of mobile phones. Accordingly, 10 jammer units have been set up inside the precincts of the jail premises spread over 20 acres of land at an estimated cost of around Rs. 4.5 crores.

Ballari Central jail is the third after Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru and Central Jail Mysuru to get jammers, said jail authorities informed adding that the jammers were functioning effectively.
