Sankranti this year turned out to be the last one for 37-year-old Vijay Kumar, a software engineer with Wipro posted in Nigeria. A cruel turn of events made this his last trip. Vijay, who, after three months, returned home for the festival, had planned to take his family back with him to Nigeria.
After celebrating the festival with his family and parents in his hometown in Nellore, Vijay was returning to the Bangalore office to finalise the visa formalities for his family.
His wife, Padmaja, his son Adi (2) and daughter Akshaya (4), are now in MVJ Hospital and are out of danger. The doctors treating the family had to sedate Padmaja to keep her calm.
“Vijay had planned to shift the family to Nigeria,” Bhagwan Reddy, one of his colleagues who came to receive the body at the hospital, told the media.
Mahendra, a 25-year-old farmer from Nellore admitted to the hospital, was on his way to NIMHANS to get medical treatment for his elder sister D. Lakshmi. “Lakshmi is suffering from a neurological problem and after several efforts, we managed to get an appointment from the doctor,” Mahendra said.
The siblings, who suffered multiple fractures, are being treated at MVJ Hospital.
District in-charge Minister R. Ramalinga Reddy visited the hospital and announced Rs. 1 lakh each as compensation to the families of the deceased.
He also announced free medical treatment to victims and directed the Transport Department officials to conduct proper investigation.
