Vijayapura Zilla Panchayat president Neelamma Meti has instructed the Deputy Director of Public Instruction to install biometric systems in schools in rural areas to curb the practice of teachers abstaining from work at regular intervals.
Chairing a Karnataka Development Programme review meeting here recently she said that while most teachers in urban areas were regular in their work, the problem was extensive in rural areas.
“The issue must be addressed immediately in the interest of students, and the DDPI has a big responsibility in this matter,” she said. She said that with many teachers involved in politics, they were neglecting their academic responsibilities. “Teachers will not be allowed to compromise with the careers of students. They must do their job responsibly,” she said. DDPI Srishail Biradar said the district had 1,870 primary government schools and 152 high schools and action had been taken to install biometric machines in all high schools. However, the department was facing fund shortage to install them in primary schools, he said. Zilla panchayat chief executive officer Sundresh Babu asked the DDPI to prepare a proposal for installation of biometric systems in primary schools in rural areas and schools located on border areas.
Mr. Babu told the DDPI to take steps to ensure that classrooms did not face leakage during rain. He said that the second priority should be to ensure drinking water and toilets in government schools. While reviewing the progress of the Social Welfare Department, Mr. Babu directed officials to ensure that government hostels for girls had CCTV cameras.
