Hassan police have decided to beef up security around historical monuments in Belur, Halebid and Shravanabelgola in Hassan district following inputs from the Intelligence Department with regard to a threat to Channakeshava Temple in Belur.
The executive officer of the temple in Belur, R.V. Latha, received information from an official of Central Government’s Intelligence Department posted in Hassan, over the phone on Wednesday, that there was a threat to the temple. It was suggested that the temple was in the hit-list of a terrorist group.
Based on the information, the officer wrote to the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police in Hassan to increase security around the temple. Following this, the Superintendent of Police, R.K. Shahapurwad, has decided to increase police deployment around the temple. He is also planning to hold meetings with officers of other departments in this regard.
“We have received the letter from the officer, we will take appropriate action,” he told The Hindu . He added that the security would also be increased around Halebidu temple and Shravanabelgola, the other two major attractions of the district.
