The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) plans to sell or auction marginal lands (100 sq.ft to 200 sq.ft) located near houses in colonies developed by it in different cities.

KHB chairman Malikayya V. Guttedar, Congress MLA, said the board would either sell marginal lands to house owners at the prevailing guidance value rates or auction them to establish milk parlours or vegetable or fruit shops.

The board has not estimated the number of marginal lands available, he said, adding that a good number of them exist in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Kalaburagi and Mysuru, among other cities.

Distribution of sites

The proposal is to distribute 20,000 sites in 2017-18. Nearly 8,000 have been formed and are ready for sale in various parts of the State, with the price ranging from ₹400 to ₹1,000 a sq.ft.

Mr. Guttedar said the State government has cleared a proposal on construction of affordable housing projects on recovered government lands in Bengaluru and other parts of the State. A total of 800 acres of encroached lands has been recovered.

About one lakh houses will be constructed in cooperation with the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation and the Karnataka Slum Development Board by raising funds from LIC, he said.

He also said the board has been burdened by an additional ₹650 crore owing to the implementation of the Land Acquisition Policy of 2013. The KHB was in the process of acquiring 1,700 acres in several parts of the State, at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore.

He added that Cauvery water is being provided to the residents of Suryanagar Layout in Bengaluru by providing ₹85 crore to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
