U. R. Rao, former ISRO Chairman and Secretary, Department of Space during 1984-94, will be honoured with the International Astronautical Federation Hall of Fame Award for 2016.

The IAF honour is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the progress of astronautics within the framework of the IAF's activities, an ISRO release said on Friday.

The award and certificate will be presented at the 67th International Astronautical Congress being held in Guadalajara in Mexico on September 30.

The IAF Hall of Fame consists of a permanent gallery of honoured personalities, a citation, biographical information and a picture on the IAF website.

In 2013, Dr. Rao became the only Indian to be inducted into the Satellite Hall of Fame of the Society of Satellite Professionals International, Washington.
