Manikantha, the 28-year-old elephant from Sakrebailu elephant camp that had fallen ill, is said to be in a stable condition now.
The bull elephant had entered the forest last week after breaking the shackles it had been bound with.
The mahouts and kavadis of Sakrebailu camp found it fallen down, about four km away from the camp on Saturday.
The animal looked tired and when offered, did not consume any food and water.
Vinay S., senior veterinary officer of Shivamogga Wildlife Division, told The Hindu that Manikantha could have consumed hard wood or bamboo and developed digestive problems.
A medical investigation revealed that the hard substance had also caused the animal to choke.
Team assembled
A veterinary team including doctors from the Department of Forest and Wildlife and experts from the College of Veterinary Sciences, Shivamogga, was assembled to treat the ailing tusker.
As the animal did not consume any food or water, it was given fluids intravenously. It was also treated with vitamin tablets and antibiotics. Mr. Vinay said that the elephant was responding to the treatment and on Sunday afternoon, it had started consuming food and water.
Manikantha was brought to Sakrebailu camp from a temple in Bengaluru in 2006.
As the elephant did not consume any food or water, it
was given fluids intravenously.
