The chairperson and four other members of a committee set up to inquire into sexual harassment of women at workplace, formed at the Hampi Kannada University, have resigned en masse, on the charge that the university administration has not been initiating suitable action as recommended by the committee.

H. Nagaveni, chairperson; Sadhana Tantri, Syndicate member; Siddagangamma, associate professor; S.Y. Somashekar, associate professor, and D. Veena, submitted resignation letters to the Registrar of Kannada Univeristy on Thursday, Ms. Nagaveni informed The Hindu .

According to sources, the committee was unhappy over the university administration not implementing the decisions taken by the committee on matters referred to it. As per the Sexual Harassment of Women and Work Places (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, the employer had no right to interfere and had to implement the decision taken by the committee in toto . Sources said that it was the other way round at the university, as observed in a couple of cases that came up before the committee, citing a recent case where the university administration had not implemented the committee’s decision.

When contacted, Hi.Chi. Boralingaiah, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu that he would place the resignation letters submitted by the committee members before the Syndicate for taking a decision in the matter.

They allege that Hampi university administration has not been initiating suitable action as recommended by the panel
