A committee constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) will inspect vessels of floating casinos in river Mandovi here next Tuesday to assess sewage treatment and discharge of waste generated by them.
Local activist Sudip Tamhankar had approached the NGT alleging that the offshore casinos have been polluting river Mandovi. The Pune bench of NGT issued an interim order to restrict offshore casinos from throwing waste into the river. Goa has five offshore casinos of which four are operational in Mandovi.
An interim order of NGT had asked the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to intervene and prevent the casinos from dumping garbage and ‘hazardous waste’ into the river.
The GSPCB had filed an affidavit with NGT recently undertaking to submit a report after the inspection by the committee, to NGT, an official of the board told The Hindu on Tuesday.
The panel, consisting of the director of National Institute of Technology or his nominee, one representative of the State Environment department, Director of National Institute of Oceanography or his nominee, Captain of Ports and member secretary of GSPCB, will conduct the inspection.
