Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday directed the Social Welfare Department to take steps for taking up the caste census — an issue that has been pending for over nine years. Mr. Siddaramaiah, who had cleared the decks for the census by providing Rs. 2 crore in the budget as Finance Minister during the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government, noted that the issue had not moved forward.

Pointing out that about Rs. 60 crore was required for the caste census, he said presently a sum of about Rs. 23 crore was available for it. He would immediately provide the remaining funds, he said.
